I guess I should chime in, since with my current setup the only
sound-producing device I have is my Yamaha XS keyboard (labeled
EMU10K1 MPU 401 ..., since it's plugged into my SB Live card). If I were
to start up a software synthesizer, I think I would appreciate
Rosegarden detecting it automatically, but I don't think I'd want my
MIDI playback device automatically changed from my XS to the
soft-synth. I may want to make that change, but I'd do it manually. I
think this goes along with what Julie is saying (if I understand
correctly).

(Now, I've got this configuration - XS as playback device [and my
external MIDI controller, also labeled EMU10K1 MPU 401 ..., as the
"MIDI recording" device] - saved as my default studio, so I expect it
to be this way pretty much all the time unless I deliberately change it.
If I was running RG for the first time or without a saved default
studio, I might have a different opinion on this topic, for that
context.)
