Concerning you Alsa woes:
I downloaded the pre-release from sourceforge and compiled and ran it in a
separate directory.
Connect and Disconnect were working for me in the release as well.
I'm stumped. I wish I could help you more.
These are the relevant packages that I have installed on my karmic-rt x64
distro. I don't know if this will help at all.
