I avoided it as long as possible because it was going to take forever to fsck my 1 TB of disks. Rebooting cured this. Nothing further to worry about here. Sorry for all the noise, but I had no idea my system had gotten into some kind of broken state. Hopefully this was merely the result of some routine security update. -- D.
