But I think you still have the same problem with the singular, because you're relying on the fact that in English it happens to be possible to use the singular here and that's not necessarily the case in another language. The question is whether zero segments is singular or plural, and in this context in English the answer happens to be "either". To translate it, you still have to consider that question. (I'm just rambling mildly here -- I don't actually mind which text goes in!)
