The best answer I can give you is to suggest that you go look at
CompositionView::resizeEvent() and try to figure it out.

I swapped ::resize() for ::copy() in the way prescribed by the docs, but I'm
just acting as a trained monkey following instructions. I have no idea what
this code does, how it used to work, or why following the instructions breaks
it so catastrophically.

I'm changing parts in a machine, but the only thing I know about the machine
is that when you swap these new parts in, it changes the main window canvas
editing area to a fixed 96 x 26 of usable editing area inside a big empty
rectangle. That fixed size is extremely resistant to change. I haven't been
able to get it to come off that size by one pixel in either direction. It's
stuck there permanently.

I just don't have a clue. I've certainly poured my fair share of time down
the well, and if it comes down to me figuring it out, Rosegarden dies with the
end of the Qt 3 compatibility layer. It's that simple.

Which reminds me... I added you to the project a few days ago, unless there's
another tehom on SourceForge. You should have commit access now.
