It's moot now, but to answer your question Yves, I had 3 goals:
* Wisely or not, users can easily create an overlapping situation and be
faced with a Notation display that looks buggy/wrong (even if it isn't
really).
* It's true that users can easily remove overlap manually: create new
tracks, set them to the same settings, and move overlapping Segments to
them, and if the overlapping later goes away, find and delete redundant
tracks. But it's nicer to manage that automatically.
* Making the Notation display less tied to tracks makes it more flexible,
which I had some ideas about.
But now I am rethinking the whole idea.
