There are some days left before the holiday break, and maybe that's the thing to concentrate on now. Actually, it may be worth putting down development for a couple of weeks in order to tackle that beast. If doc and these things are actually the top problem for rsyslog to reach it's potential, fixing that probably helps much more than new features. I have to admit I don't like to do (that kind of) doc, and I am not good and relatively slow at it, but it may be the thing that needs to go on top of the TODO list...
one repeated issue that I was going to try and work on tonight, but I had forgotten that the new Hobbit movie was hitting, so i won't get to it until at least next week, and you can probably answer off the top of your head.
the documentation at build_from_repo.html talks about fetching the git source, but people repeatedly get tripped up over other libraries that aren't there, or aren't at the right version.
This page needs to list librelp, libestr and any other 'unusual' libraries that are needed to compile rsyslog. for the ones that Adiscon hosts the git repository for, those repositories should be listed explicitly as well (experienced people know that if the rsyslog repo is at git://git.adiscon.com/git/rsyslog.git then the relp repo is probably at git://git.adiscon.com/git/librelp.git but newcomers don't, and get stuck)
what are the libraries that adiscon hosts, where are they, and what order do they need to be compiled in?
I would have to get a clean system and figure it out by trial and error, you can probably answer off the top of your head :-)
