Yes, I think some people discussed this a few months ago...
I haven't kept up to date with what is(n't) going on in that
area, but as I've taken up the Audiality project again, I'll
probably start looking for powerful workstations with efficient
interrupt handling in a year or so. For now, the goal is to
get the engine running on 586+ including SMP, but if the
project really takes off, no workstation will be too fast. :-)
BTW, is it still true that the AXP is nearly twice as efficient
as the x86 on fp processing? (Haven't checked out the tests
for a while.) What I'm dealing with is (audio) signal processing
with plug-ins and very small buffers (less than 40 samples), so
minimal function call overhead and fast fp are important points.
As for the possibility of porting RTL to AXP; Any CPU with
decent interrupt handling (ahem... x86? ;-) should be able to
do preemptive interrupt servicing. (Keep interrupts enabled all
the time; check for reentrance and other nasty side effects
etc...) I haven't dug that deep into the RTL implementation
details and I don't know Alpha asm, so I can't say how
complicated the porting of the low level stuff would be.

(Can't take no more Windoze digital audio workstation BS, so
I'll just work on this until I have a solution. The right tools
for the job... That's NOT Windoze.)
