I've liked the Alpha ever since I saw the first drafts of the
architecture manual.  It's an impressively clean design and has
excellent performance.  There's been plenty of work done on it showing 
how well it can perform jobs traditionally given to DSPs.

The one drawback is that Alpha platforms tend to be expensive.  Compaq 
has made noises about fixing this (but then again DEC made those
noises N times in the past, each time without real success.)  For my
own (amateur) purposes right now, I'd love an Alpha but probably won't 
want to spend the money; a tempting alternative is the StrongARM.
