I'll do better than that ;) I'll give a step-by-step report of what I am doing.

Actually I did expect the kernel src to be identical but I have just
patched the fresh kernel from Wolgang's advised kernel.org  site and
after just checking to make sure I am using the same configure,
discovered that the previous kernel had been patched with squashfs and
unionfs. So far this is the only perceivable difference.
I am NOT going to patch the new kernel for the simple reason that I
want to see whether rtnet at least builds on the new/fresh kernel. If
it does I will go back to patch with squashfs and unionfs to see if
that perhaps is the cause for this problem.
