I'd rather not use this group to promote something else, but seriously, try mootools. Its documentation is great, the people on the forums are most helpful, and it's like 25% the size of prototype/ scriptaculous (64.5K vs. 263K (121.1K for prototype and 141.9K for scriptaculous).
