I am very sorry to hear that. In the past gentoo served me well and I am not at all used to 'weird problems', although I use the testing branch. It seems like you speak out of frustration, may I ask what particular events caused your negative view on gentoo? > Try to reproduce your problem on sth. else, or use a clean gentoo install > (with the *recommended* optimisation switches), and most likely, your > problem will silently go away on its own. I am not really sure which optimisation switches you mean. In case it's CFLAGS you are talking about: -O2 -pipe -march=nocona -fomit-frame-pointer Can you elaborate on why it would be a good idea to redo the gentoo bootstrap? In the seven years that I use gentoo now, nobody suggested something like this. And to be honest, I myself am unable to see why that would help me to debug the problem, which is what I want to do. I more assume that that would _maybe_ make the problem go away _silently_ without anybody getting an idea of what the problem even was. The problem that I am facing can potentially be a bug in rxvt-unicode, ncurses, one of the X11 libraries or something else. A lot of problems are first discovered on gentoo testing for obvious reasons and a fix for that may be of benefit for everybody, not only gentoo users. It may be also of interest that I see that problem on all my gentoo boxes (2). I again ask (the whole list) for hints how to debug this problem. In particular: * Are there certain versions of X11 libraries that are known to make problems in combination with rxvt-unicode * Were there similar problems in the past? + If yes then: What was the cause? How could that be fixed? Thanks in advance for everybody's time.
