Really not. I can hold an IMAP with imap-keepalive=10 and kill -ALRM like grazy, if i come back via :wq then the new file content is used. And vim ... does have an ALRM handler, but it seems to be used only temporarily.
Are you seeing the IMAP write error when you return from vim? What process are you sending kill -ALRM to?

I don't think that Microsoft comes into it. I don't know what is going on, but I have been given access to his system, and seen it happen to me as well, though with nano rather than emacs because starting up emacs over several ssh connections is painfully slow.
Tell me what process I need to direct kill -ALRM at in order to replicate what you have done.
