Hi Peter; My own experience is that Kadee 802, Kadee No.5 and AM "Snaplock" dummy couplers all work pretty well with one another, so my fleet is equiped with a mixture. The AM couplers are basically "dummys" with no uncoupling ability other than lifting the car, so they go on groups of cars that will not be uncoupled often. I use the K802/and SHS couplers on their cars since the cars are set up to take them. I somewhat prefer the size of the Kadee No.5, and use it on most other cars (they are eaiser to fit to most AM and any Ace conversions).
I have not used the Sargent couplers, but they do not work with any other brand. They are certainly a nice looking coupler, basically a full scale model of the real thing. I would consider them more if I were starting out (depending on the level of detail and operation you plan, and on your ability to reach in to couple or uncouple at all point where that is possibly required).
