Ed,  By the jest of your message, your friend must be using the plywood 
as a substitute for the typical 1 x 4 used for the L girders and cross 
stringers.  I would think that would be an excellent idea if dimensional 
lumber is not the best.  The only shortcoming of his method might be the 
length of only 8'.  I was able to obtain (from one of our member's 
divorce) a PU truck load of seasoned straight lumber with many 
pre-assembled L girders in a 14' length.
