Hi All,
These are just some of my thoughts, and this is coming from a 99 percent steam
modeller. I would suggest that if any 6 axel diesel unit is lacking in S, it
is the ubiquitous SD40-2. They are/were all over the place especially
in Canada that did not own any of the SD7/9's. Would they be successful from a
marketing point of view? I can't tell you. Research would have to be done. I
know that the brass ones do sell fairly easily on EBay (except for the CN
wide-nose version). The SD40-2's are becoming 2nd generation classics. The
1970's to present modellers could benefit.
Although GMD/EMD is very well represented in S scale, (SHS F3/7, SHS NW2, SHS
SW1200, AM E8/9, FP7, GP9, DPH GP7 shell), this is an area where some thought
could be given.
ALCO is fairly well represented by AM's FA2's, the PA's, the RS3 and if you
build kits the RM RS1/2/3 and S2/4. Not too bad, but one of the C series might
prove to be of interest.
Interestingly, and this may show where the focus of the marketplace really is,
OMI's Alco S2's seem to cause more fervour than any other diesels on EBay.
Perhaps, the transition era is still where it's at and given that...
The only diesel maker that has not been covered very well is Fairbanks-Morse,
CLC in Canada. Aside from the AM Trainmaster, nothing else has been done to my
knowledge. I know that in Canada, the HO C Line was such a hit that it sold
very well in the US. The orginal impetus and funding came from Canadian
Hobbycraft. Lifelike US took delivery of US roads only after the Canadian
roads were covered. Hobbycraft did so well with that one that they are now
producing the rare 5 axel version. I believe that a C Line or an H Line would
do well in S.
However, these are only opinions and I still maintain that a
standard non-brass Pennsy K4s and NYC Hudson J1, of the SHS standard, would
storm the marketplace.
That said, I wonder if Bill Lane would buy a non-brass Pennsy K4s of today's
high level of standards? Bill, did they use the Banshee whistle in the K4s?
cheers,
Andy Malette
P.S. I apologize if I left any diesel out from any manufacturer.
