John, The trainstuff LLC kits that I bought are possibly 4-5 years old
and are made with a slightly yellowish mix. The wall units have a swirl
pattern on the flat side perhaps indicating that the various elements
might not have been mixed completely. As soon as I noticed the wall
sections bowing I super glued brass structural shapes on the back side.
Unfortunately they started to warp in different areas. I think the only
way to save them is to completely laminate the walls to perhaps
something like aircraft plywood or Gatorfoam. The problem with doing
this is cutting out areas for windows and now we start loosing the
thinness of a false front wall section. Most of my older kits from PBL,
V&T Shops, & Arkansas Valley were a brownish color with a distinct
smell. They had some warpage problems but with a little heat and some
inside bracing have done very well.
I have had no warpage with my Pine Canyon kits at this time. I've
also have a Kaslo PS-1 boxcar and a couple of Ridgeway Fowler boxcars
either under construction or waiting for more building time, that seem
to be doing okay. The resin seems to be a bit softer so that might be
an improvement. Maybe Jim from Smoky Valley might give us some idea on
this.
I have a couple of the old HO Magnasumn (sp) kits from a long time
ago and they haven't warped, however many of those wall sections don't
match very well from the start.
