Dick (and all),

It is my view that "3-Point" gauges are more suited for use in hand-laying
track than they are for checking the gauge of existing track. A gauge for
hand-laying was my focus when I designed those gauge(s) I posted about recently
(see here again :
http://www.trainweb.org/seaboard/ODDSTUFF/MultiRailGauge.gif), and this might
be why you (Dick) didn't understand my design. And I have to admit that I
failed to mention my focus. So... my bad.

As for a gauge that is more suited for CHECKING THE GAUGE of existing track, I
feel that something very similar to, if not identical to the HO NMRA Gauge (see
here : http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/98-1) is what we really need in
S. But I understand that such a gauge, of course, would only be suited to
SCALE modelers.

  Subject: {S-Scale List} Three-Point Track Gauges -- Problems

  All --

The reason there are no three-point track gauges presently available is
likely because of varying railhead widths. Each rail size (125, 100,
83, 70) has a different width railhead. And sometimes you will find
different widths within the same nominal rail size (O scale code 100 vs.
S scale code 100, for example). A three-point gauge must be made for a
specific railhead width. That's just too many combinations for a
  practical commercial product.

The best way (for me, at least) to gauge rail on curves, if spreading
out the gauge on curves is what you want to do, is to use the NASG track
gauge makimum measurement -- where the gauge just drops in off its
  little shelf.
