Let me try and clarify. The LAST year of one era might also be the
FIRST year of the following era. Let's suppose a certain box car was
first made by it's prototype manufacturer in the year 1969. It
typically would have lasted 10-20 years in service after that
introduction date of 1969. Suppose you model the NYC up to the point
where it merged with the PRR to form the Penn Central. And, let's also
assume that you are fairly strict about what you will buy for your
pre-PC layout. In this instance, you might answer the poll with the
year 1967 or 1968 which is when the Penn Central was formed. By
answering in this manner, the potential manufacturer of a hypothetical
freight car will know that you are probably not a potential customer for
this particular box car. If you are not very strict about being pre-PC,
you might answer 1970 in which case you would be viewed as a potential
customer since you would at least consider buying a car that was first
made in 1969. Perfectly clear now? Having fun yet? It really is not
all that difficult. Cheers...Ed L.
