If a turnouts of suppose to run say scale equipment, there must be some sort of
standard as to how that turnout needs to be made for scale equipment to able to
run through it. If is made to a different standard that has bigger gaps where
rails cross then the distance a standard scale wheel can work with, there is
going to be a problem.
Right now, scale turnouts should be able to handle code .100 wheels, but code
.088 wheels from Des Plains Hobbies are going to have a problem crossing that
gap. A turnout made for code .088 would not be able to handle code .100 wheels.
The tread and flange are going to be thicker or narrower as the case maybe. The
guard rail spacing needs to be different so as to keep the wheel aligned thru
the frog.
If you ONLY have say hi-rail or scale equipment, you only need a turnout for
that equipment, but if you have a mix and you want to run that mix, these guy
are are trying to make a turnout so you can and this list is where we are
trying to work that out.
This test if created and run would let all of us know, that unless you want to
and do build your own turnouts okay, but if you want someone else to build
them, what they build will work for your equipment and if you have a mix and
the turnout is suppose to handle a mix, it either will or won't after the test
so you know.
There are now 4 makers of hi-rail turnouts to my knowledge: SHS, American
Models, Tom's Turnouts and now American 'S' Gauge. SHS, Tom's Turnouts and ASG
are suppose to also handle scale wheelsets because of the design WITHOUT
modification by the buyer. This test if created and run will either support or
disprove any claims made the maker based on standards used to make the test. It
will be easier by any maker that hand makes his/her turnouts to adjust
production. It will be a whole harder and cost more to the Chinese made units.
It will not be a winner take all because each of the three use different rail
heights for their products, but when you think about buying that product based
on the rail you use, you will know that your equipment should run on it through
the turnout without a problem provided your wheels are set to the standard of
the back to back spacing that turnout was made for.
