Ed,

I suspect most if not all modelers are in fact in both model 
railroading and in purchase railroading. I can't say as I've ever 
found anyone who scratchbuilt everything on their layout.
On the flip side I have run into folks who have not yet gotten to the 
modeling part -- they are just in purchase railroading at the moment. 
I think of this group simply as future S scale modelers and as 
current S scale investors. They invest their hard earned money for 
something they might use or might resell in the future...I've always 
appreciated these folks especially when it helps to get enough 
interest to get something made that I'm interested in, and on 
occasion I've been an investor when it helps another modeler get 
something they want, and I end up with something for possible use in 
the future. And I don't think of it as an either or situation -- I 
suspect a lot of folks do both some investing and some modeling...

Seems like good ol' free enterprise at work...
