Friends:

Since my original statement has raised so much controversy, to the
effect that some are about to come to blows over it, I thought maybe I
should explain what I mean for those who appear to be unable to
interpret it with the "spirit of a sound mind", as I intended. I
attribute this in a large part, I guess, to the litigious-minded
society that threatens to suffocate us all into a state of total
inactivity lest we "offend" someone who does not share our point of
view, like a spider suffocates and sucks the life out of prey in a
web. Opinions are like Flyer cabooses - everybody's got one.

I do not have an iron mine in my backyard, wherein I mine and smelter
metal for my projects, as some may facetiously imply that I should,
nor am I so hard-nosed as to suggest that only those with a complete
machine shop build credible models from bar stock. What I am saying
is, that with a little initiative and ingenuity the things available
now can be the basis for things unavailable (VERY little, in some
instances, like signal masts).

I never fail to be amazed or impressed with what arises out of
adversity (read – lack of commercial availability). One memorable
example that comes to mind is Ed L.'s NYC passenger cars (1975) that
he crafted from American Flyer passenger car shells. In other words,
he created something that wasn't available from something that was.
Another is Bud Rindfleish's 90-ft. Passenger coach (1981) that he made
from derelict American Flyer New Haven passenger cars (you know, the
ones reminiscent of pot-belly pigs). There are more, but space
limitations prevail.

Many of the models and "kits" I constructed in the "early days",
while they may not be up to "today's" standards, occupy a prominent
place with newer stuff on my layout, simply because they are as much a
product of my creativity as my wallet. In context with SHABBONA RR's
objective, they don't look half bad, either! Now, if you'll excuse me,
I need some pot signal bases at [switch-bashed] Shabbona Jct. Lego
blocks, anyone?
