I'm a scratchbuilder from way back, so am quite familiar with the process. The
advantage of a kit is that it eliminates the lengthy design phase of a project.
It takes quite some time to do the research and drawings as well as figuring
out how to best go about assembling the beast. It's not so bad with square
corners, but a roundhouse has many geometric complexities that really make
initial design important. While I'm a freelancer based on a particular
prototype, I'm a little too fussy to just slap something together. This is
going to be just below eye level and right next to the table edge. It needs to
be a showpiece that will display S in all its 1/64th glory. At this point in
my life, I would rather kitbash something than scratch-build it.

Now, having said all that, I just found out I'm getting layed off from work
at the end of January. Perhaps time will no longer be a major factor (but
money surely will). We'll see.

I know it's not uncommon to rework HO structures into S. The price
of the CMR HO roundhouse ($210) is a bit high for me, but doable with
help from Ebay. That's why I was asking about the door openings.

What is the attraction of starting with an HO roundhouse instead of
just building an S scale roundhouse?
Weren't they all pretty much built to fit a specific location? Seems
to me it's just a matter of picking brick, wood, or whatever
construction material is desired and then cutting out the parts and
gluing them together? what is the HO kit needed for?....dave
