I agree. The brake feature was one of the things I lost when I switched
command control systems from Dynatrol to DCC. And I had it on a Heathkit
throttle I built at the beginning of my non-AF days.

We should have controllers with a throttle, Johnson bar, and the two brakes.
Those Diesel guys should have 12 notch throttles and the two brakes. In
addition, momentum should be in the system so it is easy to change it with
the number of cars on the train. We need an advanced throttle that can send
a "net" speed step to the locomotive based on all the inputs, not just the
position of a single knob or encoder. You don't want to have to reprogram
momentum every time a car is picked-up or dropped-off. I've thought about
actually attempting this in the past, but I need to work on my layout first.

Decoder installation is a lot easier than in the past. Back in my Dynatrol
days, I actually cut one in half to make it fit. The hard part was
soldering all the jumper wires to the cut circuit board traces. We've come
a long way since the days when $50 got you one DCC decoder with two
functions and 2-digit addressing (and $50 was worth more than today's $50).

The physical aspects of installation in the locomotives are much more
difficult than I imagined or would prefer.

Once it is up and running, I do not understand why the standard does not
emulate an actual set of air brakes with independent and train brakes. Why
do all
the electronics and omit this basic feature of locomotive operation? It was
available in advanced DC throttles in the 60s.
