Take the early-to-mid GeePs, for instance... a great many of them are
still in use today, so they could be justifiably used by both early
transition-era modelers as well as those of the modern era.

Hi John, Yep, the local freight was pulled by GP38-2 and GP40-2's
yesterday, an a while back it was SD40-2's. I don't recall when these
locos were produced but they look great now in their fading glory. I
could go for a tall cool American models or SHS GP40-2 right now! I
know OMI made a GP38-2 but I don't like to spend money on brass and I
prefer mass produced drive trains. I doubt many newcomers to the hobby
in general or to S scale would also be buying brass.
Remember Athearn HO blue box models were a large part of the
reason HO had a big run from the 50's to now, but athearn is getting
all high minded so the time is ripe for a new kid on the block to
carry the banner for the poor boy. Why not S this new generation? For
reference Weaver makes some O scale models that would be ideal if they
were S size instead, made in USA, simple to assemble, many, many paint
schemes, modest cost, continuous production, very sturdy. I'd fill up
my shelves with something like that if I could.
Meanwhile I'm playing with N scale just cause it's so available and
so cheap, A cement hopper costs $5 plus postage! a whole train load of
them fits on my desktop, and I love hoppers! Check it out
