I found very little trauma is switching scales. In fact, I find it to be part
of the fun. S scale is probably my last switch however. I'm glad I
experienced the rest, because now I recognize the best :o)

Hi Chris, I don't know about the rest of us but my goal is only to
have more S modelers so the manufacturers will have incentive make
more new stuff. I want centerbeam lumber cars, bulkhead flatcars, 57
foot mechanical PFE reefers, etc.
Selling off HO to buy S is not that hard, I had over 400 O scale
cars and zero S scale when I decided to model a bit in S scale and I'm
down to maybe 150 O scale and up to about 50 S scale now. It just
takes some time and effort, all my O scale was purchased used so there
was little depreciation lost and my S scale is also purchased used or
on sale so it would not be hard to switch again.
The particular advantage of S scale is that one can have larger,
better handling models than HO scale but a more realistic scenery to
track ratio than O scale( Ed L. told me this the first time I asked
the group about S scale btw.) Just because someone models in another
scale doesn't mean they made the wrong choice, preferences change as
we age, but it would be easier to be able to get the newbie directly
into S scale so they don't have that negative inertia to overcome.
So , If S becomes a larger segment of the hobby I'll gain by
making my modeling easier but if the situation remains the same I'll
plug along splicing and dicing cement hoppers or turning O27 boxcars
into S scale, and when I get to the point that I have a place to run
them I'll learn to resin cast the cars I need if no one makes them by
then. I've still got a while before layout construction begins so I
don't feel rushed and meantime I'll play with a little N scale and
I'll enjoy watching the soap opera of "The S group reply to group or
individual button setting " unfold ( better check the line before I
hit send to make sure it still says "to group", Yep still normal!)
