Hi Ken --
I can't speak for your poster's hobby shop, but some things that Walthers
sells to their retailers are at a short discount, meaning that the retailer
has no additional room for giving a deal to the customer. I don't know if
this was what happened in his case, but it is a lot more prevalent is S than
in other scales. In this day and age, I think a dealer is looking to lose
a customer when he doesn't explain his sales situation so that one knows
that he is not taking advantage of you. Too easy to order on the 'net...
Web sales are usually done by folks who deal directly with the producer so
they don't have to live with Walthers' discount to dealer policies.
Have fun!

It seems that I hit a sore point among some S scalers. -- Ken Hough
One poster sent me a private reply. I'll quote part of it.
" My local shop is great at stocking HO, N, Lionel, MTH etc. But when I
asked him to try to get a SHS boxcar (through Walthers) the owner said
"So you are one of those S guys. Why can't you make up your minds if you
are scale, or tinplate?" I gave him the item number to order and it was in
stock. I got it a week later. The store owner discounts everything about
15% and I assumed I'd get that same discount. No I did not, full list.
Many places on the web offer discounts on S scale.
