Here and there one finds Northeastern streamlined passenger car roofs. The
arch on these roofs seem to be right on for a streamlined car. Would it be
possible to saw off the AM roofs, perhaps raise the side of the car with some
styrene, and then insert the Northeastern roof? I have used this technique in
transforming an AM box car into a 1932 ARA car with the flat riveted ends. Of
course, that also entailed sanding down the end ribs cast onto the car. I cut
the roof below the top horizontal rivet row and inserted the Northeastern roof
within the car. It worked.

Darrell/Ed
I read with much interest your respective posts on getting the roof of
smoothside passenger cars just right. I have the same problem try to make PS
cars
which the B&O ordered at the end of WWII. I think that is why the AM
smoothside scale cars (coaches at least) are not up to spec height-wise.
What a great suggestion Darrell regarding making a plaster mold and then
using auto body filler.!

Any ideas on where to find/make the fine details on the roof at the final
stage e.g. vents, ladder handles etc. some of which the AM cars do have.

To Darrell's point about knowing the curvature of the prototype for
modeling, I do have a very helpful reference in the name of the B&O RR
Historical
Society which I plan to obtain published roof contour drawings. I wonder how
standard PS roof contours were for the lightweight coaches which they built
for
so many RRs in the 50s? Don't know.
