I am sure you will get input from both sides of the fence...

>From my experience, power through the points is OK IF -- 
1) you can keep the contact areas clean (both tip and heel of the point)
2}you have a reliable connection at the heel of the point (solid rail or 
wire around the joint).   I find this to be the most likely culprit in 
failure to conduct, especially if the area has been ballasted and glue has 
found its way into the joint.
3) positive turnout throw to ensure contact of the point against the stock 
rail.
