Bill,

FWIW I built an HO layout with brass rail track in an unconditioned
outbuilding many years ago. This is in Northeast Texas where
temperatures vary from 20F to over 100F and humidity varies from 30%
to 80%. I relied exclusively on point contact to power the running
rails up to the frog. I had no problems with the method with the
following caveat - I oiled the track with Labelle 108 and operated
the layout at least twice per week. Labelle 108 is a non drying,
electrically conductive oil that will stop oxidation dead in its
tracks. You may notice slightly more wheel slippage when the oil is
first applied but traction will actually improve with use. I also
noticed less dirt buildup on wheelsets. I would apply 3-4 drops of
oil to each rail every three months. After operating a train
through the oil and over all the trackage I would wipe the track
down with a paper towel to remove the dirt left from the wheelsets.
The oil can easily be spot applied to the switchpoints and to the
heel areas.

Have fun and enjoy!

Lynn Ray
