I had to check to see where the speaker was!  It is a 3/4" dia. speaker with 
a plastic enclosure (Ton's Train Exchange I think) mounted on the inside 
roof of the cab. It is tipped to send sound forward, about 20 deg. off 
horizontal.  It is not visible from the side of the loco and barely so from 
the rear.  It's pretty dark in there under normal conditions.  The sound is 
quite good from a first generation Sountrax.

I'll try going the relube route again maybe I'll have better luck with the 
newer lubricants available.
