Hi Peter, and welcome to the wonderful world of S modeling...hang on...there 
are many opinions to contemplate. 

I will repeat what I was discussing with Sam Clarke of Kadee and Bill Lane, to 
help you and to try to clear up some confusion.

According to Kadee, and Sam Clarke :.."the #802 coupler is NOT OVERSIZED FOR S 
1:64 PROPORTIONS"...PERIOD!

I will include part of what I wrote Bill Lane:

The question about oversized 802 is kind of moot according to Kadee's Sam 
Clarke, who has measured, calculated and determined that this coupler (802) is 
NOT OVERSIZED for S- Scale, and follows actual dimensions of the pulling 
face/knuckle of a real type E coupler, that is 12" + /- in real life and 
calculates to .1875" and would amount to 12" +/- in S-Scale. In real life 
variations exist in production/manufacturer of a real coupler...the range Mr. 
Clarke states is usually around 12" down to, in some instances 11".

The 802  (808) are not oversized according to Kadee's Sam Clarke. He further 
stated to me that the #5 HO coupler IS 20% oversized for HO Scale and just 
about perfect for Sn3 and about 10% to small for S-Scale proportions.

In addition we talked in some length about adapting HO couplers that are in the 
20% oversize category and have the customary #5 style shank and spring plate, 
everyone should look at the adaptability of the #40 series couplers, as this 
series offers a number of different coupler shank lengths, coupler head 
orientations, overset, centered and underset coupler heads in relation to the 
shank. The 40 series is METAL and therefore more robust, as would be needed in 
S, and this series is identical to the familiar #5 coupler, except for the 
flexibility in being able to select any variety of choices in length and 
offsets. The draft gear box and spring plate are iddentical to the #5 and offer 
"delayed uncoupling".

Are all of you paying attention??? This takes care of the desired "scale" 
distance between cars of 3'-0"...and you do not have to shim/add washers to 
raise car if you can select an offset head/shank length that works!

Additionally the existing Kadee #118 - HO shelf/non-overide coupler may be OK 
to use as it does mate with #5's ....for now anyway till something else comes 
along???
