There are safety considerations restricting toy manufacturers from
having parts that are easily broken off and swallowed by a child. So

Deeper flange height insures operation on uneven surfaces. AF trains
sets were designed to run on a rug or floor on sectional track with
sharp curves and even though most are sold to adults today, the old
flanges persist. Aside from their value as a collectible (or useable
on a Hi-Rail layout) we must bear in mind that they are still toys
and must be manufactured to safety and operational standards.
And the idea of ditching the old AF track and switches for .126
trackage ain't gonna make the sales department at Flyonel very happy.
Track was one of the biggest sellers at both companies and probably still is.
