Bob, A "car knocker" who worked on the Monon in the late '40's and 50's told us that they never repainted freight car roofs. Even if they had to repair a running board, they would only paint the boards that they replaced. Steel running boards never got painted.
"Freight car brown" was any reddish brown paint they could get their hands on. There was no concern for consistency. Nice feature for sure! When I started my own business in 85', one of the first assignments I got was to a brochure for a large printing company. We wanted to show the 'largeness' by the quantity of paper they used--aka boxcars full of the stuff! My idea was to get on the roof and shoot down on a fork lift driving a large roll of 'web' paper out of the boxcar. I lucked out to find a very nicely painted (roof included) BN green boxcar at the dock. The forklift driver laid down his bridge plate (see a very old issue of the Dispatch for instruction on making one). I was within a minute of completing the shot when a SW switcher showed up and insisted on moving that car. They replaced it with one with the over sprayed galvanized roof that was rusty to the hilt! This is what makes a photographer loose his hair!!
