The JC kits offered a lot of possibilities. The roof contour is more correct than other offerings and for a time BTS/Ladd Houda offered underbody detail to really finish off the cars nicely. If you did not like to sand seal or were just lazy (that would be me), you could glue 0.005" Mylar or styrene across the roof and just paint. The smooth sides could be replaced with 0.016" aluminum flashing cut on a standard paper cutter. I then cut several new window patterns with a couple files and a "nibbling" tool, Bob Nicholson taught me that one. I think Arden has a few cars I made (too) many years ago.
As to value, I think about $20. I have often thought of using the couple dozen kits in the basement as core kits for the Laser Horizon sides, but never tried it. Tom Shortall was a wonderful gentleman and extremely helpful to modelers. I was always glad I got to meet him in person and thank him for supporting S scale before he passed away. My recollection is repeated letters to the new owner in Cincy produced no product or response. Now if we just had some decent passenger car trucks...! His widow Mary sold the line to someone in Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 80's. > Best, > Don > ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
