Thorin, I have admittedly not switched to acrylic paints. However, I don't think the paint is your problem as much as trying to brush it on. IMHO, you are never going to get a nice smooth finish no matter what paint or brush you used, when compared to an airbrush. I have heard some paints have recently changed the formula. This resulted in some coverage issues when compared to the older bottles. You just may have to spray on multiple coats with dry time between coats to get a good paint job.
If you are not happy with the results or the application all because you don't like using an airbrush, why do it and not like the outcome? Use the airbrush or get someone else to paint for you.
