Musings ... The January issue of Trains magazine brought an article titled: "10
Locomotives That Changed Railroading". You can challenge any of their choices,
but instead I thought I would see how S scale fared in offering model
railroaders products for the "10 Locomotives That Changed Railroading".

In plastic RTR, only two are represented in S: the 4-6-2 "Pacific" and U25B.
Brass offerings in S add five more to the list: 2-8-4 "Berkshire"; 4-6-6-4
"Challenger"; FT's; GP7; and SD40-2, plus of course a repeat on the 4-6-2. If
you stretch to include the long gone Loco Workshop "craftsman" RS1 kit, now you
are up to eight. That leaves two locomotives with no S scale presence.
Interestingly enough they are on the opposite ends of the time line: the 4-4-0
"American" and the GE ES44 series.

I'm not sure what that says about S scale or the editors of Trains or much
else, but it was an interesting mental exercise on a frigid, windy night after
12" of fresh snow, on top of the 8 or so we already have...
