I had already started a return to S (from O) when AM introduced the plastic box
car kits. However, an operating layout needs locomotives and the FP7 didn't do
it for me. In terms of locomotives, it was when AM introduced the more common
Diesels -- I think the GP9 was their next project (feel free to correct me) --
that I decided S Scale operation was in my future. Mind you, that future was
delayed by several years. By the time I was actively building, the S12 and
RS3s were out and those were my first locomotives.

I won't go into a tirade over the Trains list, apart from registering my strong
disagreement and disappointment at all the duplication (how many road switchers
do you need in such a list?). I WILL say that a proper title for the list, bad
as it is, is "10 AMERICAN Locomotives That Changed Railroading". How can you
ignore the Stephensons, deGlehn and Chapelon, for instance? If Albert
Kalmbach, who really KNEW his steam locomotives, were alive today he would hang
his head in shame over what his descendents have written.

Oh heck, I DID go into a tirade..

As I said, the AM GP9 did it for me.

regards ... pqr

We could probably endlessly debate the Trains Magazines prototype
choices, but I would think the locomotive that changed S Scale was the
  AM FP-7.
