I certainly agree with Jim on Loving's book. I think it is probably the best
written book on railroading I have read. AND, in western Tennessee along the
CSX, NYC gons and covered hoppers are by no means rare. Some gons are
incredibly beat up and lettering is often crude, even spray painted. But
they still serve. I never see PRR.

Should any of you seriously wish to learn more about what happened in 
eastern railroading from the 60's through Y2K - probably the greatest 
industrial turn around of the 20th century - I would highly recommend 
the book "The Men Who Loved Trains" by Rush Loving.  It's an easy read 
that includes greed, intrigue and lust for power (the truth is always 
more interesting than fiction!).  One caution though... it will 
challenge just about all the "facts" commonly held and repeated ad 
nauseum on the Internet about RR's as a business.
