Recently, someone mentioned the cost of attending a professional convention,
and the price was $300.00. I guess the point was that the cost of attending an
NASG convention was not so bad. Seen in that light, yes, the cost is not so
bad, but then an NASG convention is not a professional conventicle, is it?
Well, some modelers are so good that they certainly are professionals. Most of
us, however, are not. We just want to attend a few clinics, view what is
offered, and buy a few items.

In 1987 the convention near Chicago certainly fell short on the idea of
strolling the floor to view the items for sale. I drove all the way from
Kalamazoo where I had been attending a professional meeting just to see what
was offered. It was on a Friday, and the floor was scheduled to be open for
viewers and buyers. When I arrived, the floor was indeed open, but most of the
displays were covered with a cloth because the vendors had been invited to a
special venue and would not be back until Friday evening. If the schedule
says--as it certainly should say--that the floor is open, then it should be
open for viewing and purchase.

I left disgruntled but did attend the Dearborn convention in '96, the Colorado
convention, and the Strongville convention. I now look for conventions that
allow a day of browsing and strolling through the displays and talking with
vendors. If time is short on that aspect or only allowed on an evening, then I
definitely do not plan to attend.

And, as for professional conventions which I do attend on occasion, after
putting up money for them, I come up a bit short to fund a full four days or
pay for lodging in Baltimore, say, but try to attend at least one day or two at
locations where I can make alternate arrangements for lodging. That's just my
financial reality and perhaps not the reality of most.

Tom
