Dear Peter,
   You do not need to cut the cross member as this holds the  
sideframes/gearbox cover on to the gearbox.  We take these off all of  
the time with the engine upsidedown in a foam cradle (available from  
Port Lines).  Using the axel as a fulcrum, you can either use two  
small screw driver shafts or a pair of curved tweezers (pickups) as  
levers.  Insert the levers between the axle and the crossmember By  
pushing up on the bottom edge of the crossmember, you can distort it  
enough so that it pops off of the gearbox.
