I just finished reading the November 2008 issue of Railroad Model
Craftsman, which, on page 83, has an article about using two of the
small, cylindrical rare-earth magnets as uncouplers. They are buried
into the roadbed, near the rails, and need a clearance of about
0.030" from the rail head. The author claims significantly more
reliable operation than the Kadee uncoupler. I believe he said a
friend of his tested it on his S-scale layout (but I am going from
  memory on that one).

  Hope this helps,
  - Peter.
