In the past, when using flextrack, I sprayed everything Pactra Dark Earth, than used brushed some other colors on some of the ties for variation. Note that I immediately wiped the top of the rail with a rag or paper towel to make the rail top easier to clean. This layout is mostly hand laid, so I don't want to paint the ties since they are stained. So far I've been using a Floquil Rail Brown paint marker to do the rail sides after it is wired and detailed with joint bars, etc. Since the paint markers only come in sets with two other colors I don't really need, the next time I paint rail, I was going to try using a microbrush with the paint from a the jar. That should also be cheaper. In general, I'm going for more branch line look rather than a mainline.
In an modest efficiency effort, I don't bother adding joint bars or painting rail where it can't be seen, so some rail may be painted only on the aisle side, for example. Since I developed asthma, I'm trying to avoid spaying paint other than in a spray booth or outside, so I'm more likely to use a brush or wash. And track doesn't fit in my spray booth, although I do run it as a source of basement ventilation at times. Yes, I do know about respiratory protection and I even wear a dust mask when I cut the grass (along with safety glasses, work shoes, ear protection, hat, gloves, sunscreen, etc.). I've been working all weekend ballasting and detailing Mooar Yard, and I have a question regarding weathering rail (unless you use pre-weathered rail) 1. How do you paint the rail? 2. What color do you paint it? 3 Do you even bother (I'm beginning to lean towards #3)? I've been using Testors (Model Master) Dark Tan to represent rust, and applying it with a pipe cleaner. In the past, I have simply sprayed the track with Dark Tan and cleaned the rail heads. What do YOU do?
