All --
My Friday Night "fun" was replacing a switch-throw mechanism in a hard-to-reach
spot. A week ago, yours truly pulled out the switch-throw rod, thus killing
access to the single-track branch to Springfield staging during an operating
session.
This particulary turnout throw was one of the few remaining home-made
slide-switch throws on the layout. As these fail, I have been replacing them
with Blue Points. I didn't have any left, so I ordered another ten from
MicroMark. They arrived on Tuesday, and I installed one yesterday to replace
the slide switch.
Replacing these things on my completed layout is not always simple. This one
is
beneath a 6-inch-wide against-the-wall portion of the layout, and there's a
one-foot-deep fascia panel in front of it. I removed the fascia and spent a
lot
of time looking upward from a wheeled secretary's chair.
As I was about to redrill the mounting holes for the Blue Point (I drilled the
first set of holes 180 degrees off!), I got to thinking -- Is there any
interest
in an article describing how best (most easily) to install these things? There
are several labor-saving options, among them: Prewiring the built-in dpdt
switch, using model airplane pushrods for actuation, substituting heavier
point-throw wire, using a hemastat to hold the Blue Point in place while
screwing it down tight. Target pub would be 1:64MG "Engineering Department."
