Many years ago there was a short article in MR re ballast & sizes, etc. Sizing
screens come in sizes by number of holes per square inch, as I recall. Anyway,
I located a supplier of such screen who sold it in 6" x 6" squares. For S the
sizes recommended were #"s 30 & 50. I made two 4 sided frames that were 6 x 6
and stapled the sceen to the bottom. I started with dirt but soon discovered,
through the yellow pages (now one would use the internet @ suppose) suppliers
of grit in bulk in many colors from black to white. (These things are used by
many firms for polishing & sandblasting as well as other purposes.) A trip to
such a supplier furnished me with all the ballast colors from limestone through
cinder & red granite, etc to last me a lifetime for a small fraction of what
commercial model rr ballast would cost. This is also a good way to get model rr
coal, with a larger screen size, of course. Remember to take a magnet along
when you go. You don't want to have iron filings mixed with your ballast.
At one time there was a supplier, in MN I think, who sold the screen sized
stuff in by the pound at a very reasonable price but the shipping ran up the
cost. He had avery good product though.
Best Wishes, Chuck Porter

Subject: {S-Scale List} S Scale ballast...
Does anyone have a suggestion regarding a good medium gray ballast for S
scale. I was going to use Highball for my now defunct HO layout, and I like the
fact that it is not bird seed or crushed walnut shells. I would prefer to use
rock for a host of reasons (it does not float away when wet). I do not believe
they do S scale, however.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks....
