So two weeks ago I woke up to find three inches of water in my basement.
Luckily I have very good insurance and most of my trains and accessories were
either in Plastic storage containers or off the floor. I did loose a couple of
original boxes, both American Flyer and SHS, a few locomotives got wet and some
misc. items.
All the carpet was torn out by the restoration company that was sent by the
insurance company so I get new carpet. I am now coming to the question part. I
had a very sturdy, probably over-built, train table made from 2x4's and
waferboard. I then had the blue foam for a base and the layout on top of that.
Since the carpet was torn out they want to now come back and put in new. I have
rigged a way to raise the blue foam and suspend it from the ceiling off the 2x4
and waferboard table. Take the tables down and out so they can lay new carpet.
I am thinking this is a chance to downgrade the heavy tables that i had
supporting the layout.
I am thinking of something light enough to suspend from the ceiling with
folding legs to rest on when down from the ceiling and we are running trains.
Has anyone done this? Suggestions? The layout is 14'x6' so I would love to hear
from those that have suggestions and ideas for me. I am thinking a frame around
the entire layout of 2x4, but then crossbracing of 1x1 or maybe even smaller?
Keeping the 2" of blue foam as the base on the framework and some folding
adjustable legs. One or two sets of legs on each end and two on the long sides
of the layout.
I want it strong enough to hold together, but light enough to raise to the
ceiling with 2-3 people.
I hope I have explained this well enough to make it clearer than mud! Thoughts
and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!
