Me again.  I just looked out John Armstrong's book Creative Model Railroad 
Design (Kalmbach: ISBN: 0-89024-538-X).  On Pages 9-11 he discusses design 
criteria for exactly what you want to do, along with diagrams and a photo of 
Keith Morrison's 14 by 25 foot lift-up layout.  For rigidity, Keith used 
quarter-inch by four-inch steel plates sandwiched between 1 by 4s.  Must have 
weighed a ton.  I still think aluminum channel would the the way to go, 
especially with today's lightweight scenery techniques.
