"S"peaking of rigidity, I have a modular staging yard under construction using 
hollow core door panels about six feet long.  Lemmee tell ya, they sag!  
However, with a 4" wide piece of 1/4" plywood screwed and glued along both long 
edges, they are quite stiff.  No Viagra needed.  And the edge sticks up an inch 
or so above the track to make sure the trains do not fall to the floor.  
Perhaps you can experiment a bit with some really lightweight edge strips of 
plywood and see how it works for you.  In my case, it worked very well.  Good
