Plain and simple, S scale will never attract the boomers (I fully
agree with Tony Koester's thoughts on the growth of O and On30), or
other modelers for that matter, if they can not acquire their favorite
models in S or their favorite models in like or better quality in S.
That means no hoops, no groups, just walk into a shop, pick-up a phone
or click on your mouse and you've got the model you want.
Now, what are the models people want? Good question but I'm sure we
can all come up with (and have in the past on this group) extended
lists of locomotives and rolling stock not available in S. I'm a
steam era guy so I'd suggest 4-4-0's, 0-6-0's, 0-8-0's, ten wheelers,
pacifics, mikes, Hudsons. How about a GP7 or PS1 boxcar for the
transition era guys? We just can't look someone straight in the eye
and say say, "yes, we have that in S."
Until the transition from whatever scale to S is seamless and easy, I
just don't see S attracting large numbers of new modelers despite our
individual or collective efforts at evangelizing this great scale.
