Luther, Nooooooooo! I wouldn't use Scalecoat Oxide Red for anything NYC. I recently ordered two bottles only to find they look nothing like the color chart from Weaver but more like tomato paste. Yuk! I emailed Weaver about it and got a response stating their printing process does not produce all that accurate of a color chart and, yes, the oxide red looks very different. I was welcome to exchange the bottles with my next order.
Volume 3 of Railway Prototype Cyclopedia (circa 1999) lists NYC standard freight car color as a mid-red brown color. Closer to brown than red oxide. The formula they publish is Floquil 1 part #88 Caboose to 3 parts #175 So Freight Car Brown. They do not publish a matching Scalecoat formula. I've used this formula and it's pretty good. Floquil colors have changed a little since 1999 (or so I'm told) and if anything the formula gives you a color that is a little light. Kind of sun faded. You could mix it slightly darker if you like or chalk it up to "scale" effect. One additional issue (and here comes the real controversy), NYC cabs had their roofs painted red just like the sides. The common practice of painting the roofs black is a misconception. Some cabs had their roofs painted black, or more likely coated with a black sealing agent to stop leaks, at later dates as they were shopped. If you want a black roof, find a pic of a particular car that underwent that revision. All, in the steam era, had very dirty, sooty, roofs that look blackish. I think this might be the source of the black roof theory. Since you've got two models, why not go both ways? Paint one all red and paint another, with the appropriate road number, red with black roof. Good conversation point on your railroad and gives you some diversity. BTW - Does anyone want two bottles of Scalecoat II red oxide? I'll make you a good deal. :) Chris Borgmeyer FYI - That same RPC issue recommends Floquil #601 Zinc Chromate Primer for B&O cars. NYC caboose color Posted by: "Luther" [email protected] lutherstep Wed Dec 1, 2010 6:44 pm (PST) I have 2 Kaslow NYC cabs to build/paint. Is Scalecoat II oxide red acceptable. I just got a catalog from Weaver Models showing their product line in O , many, not all, locos and rolling stock made in USA, rtr, priced around 70$. They also showed 8 different paint schemes for the B&O wagon top box. What say you B&O experts.
